Even the most decisive person will flounder when it comes to certain decisions. But floundering when you are choosing the material for your kitchen countertops is a very bad idea. The kitchen is a vital part of every home. It is the room in which many spend most of their time. So it has to be given the attention it deserves.

Taking both function and aesthetics into account when making the decision of what material to use for your kitchen countertops will ensure that you make the right choice. Although…that doesn’t mean you have to pick one. Many kitchen designs incorporate more than one material; it can add the perfect finishing touch. So keep that in mind; don’t limit yourself!

And make sure to consider all the options:

1.Granite is a natural stone. It has a beautiful texture and as long as it is sealed correctly during installation it rarely has a problem with staining. (Although stains are a possibility since natural stone is porous so never leave liquid standing on the granite overnight). Prices are not nearly as high as they used to be on this popular material so many more are taking it into consideration.

2.Engineered Stone is heat resistant and stain resistant. It is also very easily maintained. Because it is a man-made material it is perfectly uniform making it the only choice for some kitchen designs. Pricing is similar to granite material.

3.Solid Surface has no seams. The sink bowl is an integral part of the piece. The color is solid throughout so any scratches (and scratches cannot be avoided with this material) can be sanded out easily.

4.Ceramic Tile has the positive of many, many design options. But it comes hand in hand with an uneven finished surface and grout that has to be constantly cleaned. Tile countertops also end up chipped and cracked without any easy repair options.

5.Laminate: a very inexpensive choice with many color and design options. (Granite look-a-likes are available that actually look very nice). Laminate countertops are vulnerable to being both chipped and cut; they are almost impossible to repair so cutting boards are a must.

6.Wood or Butcher Block can be a beautiful addition to any kitchen. It is most often used for aesthetic purposes, but can fulfill functional needs as well. Most use it as an accent. The many wood types and stains available result in a versatility that isn’t found in many materials.

7.Stainless Steel is found in many contemporary kitchens. It is durable and easily cleaned. It is heat resistant. But it is very easily scratched.

8.Concrete is mixed with color and poured into molds to fit the area so it is a perfect choice for unique spaces and odd shaped kitchens. It’s amazingly durable, heat and scratch resistant, but can crack.

Know your options. And use them; don’t let anyone tell you what you like. Get the info and evaluate it yourself. No one else can get a feel for exactly what you want like you can. So don’t let anyone cut you out of the decision. Take the professionals’ advice, but be aware when they aren’t taking your personal tastes and your lifestyle into account. You’re the one that will be cooking, eating…living in your kitchen.
